Although the early Chinese U.S. immigrants toiled in the gold mines and contributed labor to railroads, and while they were officially  “welcomed” by the U.S. Government, as Ms. Roberts stated, they were never really accepted by the rank and file miners and laborers. They became the first and only people officially banned from entering the United States, purely on the basis of race and ethnicity.
