Chinese Population in the U.S.

1820 to 1850 – “According to U.S. immigration records, 43 Chinese entered the Continental United states between 1820 and 1850” (Choy, et al).

1849 – “780 Chinese lived around San Francisco Bay Area” (Choy, et al).

1850 – “Chinese population in San Francisco increased to
4, 018; many began working in gold mining regions.

1852 -“According to U.S. records, about 20,000 Chinese entered through San Francisco. The estimated Chinese population in California was 25,000” (Choy, et al).

1880 – “Chinese comprised .002% of the total continental U.S. population” (Choy, et al).
